Every gallon that evaporates leaves its minerals behind, while the fresh water you add back brings in more calcium. That combination is why Phoenix pools scale up in two or three years when a pool in a mild, soft-water climate might go a decade.

Most Phoenix pools have a mix, with silicate more common on older pools that have gone years without attention. You don't need to identify it yourself — kieserite blasting removes both. Heavy silicate simply takes more passes and more media, which is where a surcharge can apply.

How do I know when my pool tile needs professional cleaning?

The honest test is your fingernail. Run it along the tile at the waterline — if you feel a distinct ridge or roughness instead of smooth glaze, you have scale. Visually, look for a chalky band that won't brush off, tile that's a different color above and below the waterline, or grout lines that have gone from crisp to filled in. Can't I just handle this myself, or have my weekly pool service do it?

Your weekly service brushes, tests chemistry, and keeps your water balanced — necessary work that genuinely slows scale down — but mineral scale is a hardened deposit chemically bonded to the tile. A brush and a net can't touch it, and most service companies don't own blasting equipment, which is why they refer this work out. As for doing it yourself: a pumice stone works by abrading, so it puts fine scratches into the glaze, and those scratches hold calcium better than the original surface did — it comes back faster next time. Acid descalers can etch grout and dull tile. And neither approach touches calcium silicate at all.

Kieserite is a naturally occurring magnesium mineral — magnesium sulfate monohydrate — that's mined, screened, and processed for industrial use, and used widely in Europe as an agricultural fertilizer. Two properties make it ideal for pool tile. It is soft, so it removes calcium without abrading the tile beneath it. And it is fully water-soluble, so anything that lands in your pool dissolves instead of sitting on the bottom. It's non-toxic, non-hazardous, contains no solvents or caustics, and is chemically a close cousin of Epsom salt.

Why do you use kieserite instead of glass beads?

Because glass beads bring two problems we'd rather your pool not have. Hardness: glass beads run about 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale, at or above the hardness of a lot of tile glaze, glass tile, and natural stone — they can frost, haze, or micro-pit the surface, and once the glaze is compromised, calcium re-adheres faster than before. Cleanup: glass beads don't dissolve. They sink. Homeowners find them in the deep end, in the skimmer, in the pump basket, and packed into pebble surfaces for months afterward, and they can chew through filter media and equipment seals. Kieserite is softer than the tile it's cleaning and dissolves completely, so there's no permanent residue to chase. We still vacuum, hose and wipe the pool and the surrounding areas before we leave — the difference is that we're cleaning up dust and calcium, not digging glass out of your plaster for an hour.

Is kieserite actually safe for my tile?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and that's precisely why we chose it. Because the media is softer than glazed ceramic and porcelain, it removes the calcium sitting on top and stops at the glaze rather than cutting into it. The finish underneath comes out intact, which is why properly blasted tile looks like the original tile instead of a dulled version of it. We still walk your pool before we start and flag anything unusual — heavily worn, previously damaged, or already-frosted tile will look better after cleaning, but no method restores it to new.

What happens to all the media that falls into my pool?

It dissolves — which is the practical advantage of kieserite over every hard media on the market. There are no beads or grit left sitting on your pool floor for the next two years, and nothing embedded in a pebble surface that you'll be finding long after we've gone. That said, dissolving isn't the same as tidying up, and we don't treat it that way. Before we leave we vacuum the pool to the sewer cleanout, hose and wipe the tile clean, hose down the deck and surrounding areas, and blow clear anything that needs it. A little mineral haze in the water for a day or two while the media fully dissolves is normal, and your filter clears it on its own.

Will kieserite mess up my pool water chemistry?

Accepted Answer

Not in any way you'll need to manage. What dissolves into your water is magnesium sulfate — the same compound as Epsom salt. It doesn't consume chlorine, doesn't swing your pH meaningfully, and doesn't harm plaster, pebble, vinyl, or equipment. It will nudge your total dissolved solids up slightly, which is worth knowing if your pool is already near the top of its TDS range. Run your filter, test your water in a day or two, and adjust normally.

Is it safe around my kids, pets, and landscaping?

Yes. Kieserite is non-toxic and non-hazardous — it's sold as fertilizer in agricultural markets, and magnesium and sulfur are plant nutrients. Overspray that reaches your beds or lawn won't burn anything. That said, blasting is a loud job with airborne dust and equipment running, so we do ask that kids and pets stay inside or in another part of the yard while we work, the same as with any contractor.

We adjust pressure and technique for the surface, and if we see something we don't believe we can improve safely, we'll tell you before we take your money rather than after.

What about sand blasting? Isn't that the same idea?

Same idea, very different outcome. Silica sand is hard and aggressive — it strips the calcium and keeps right on going into your glaze, your grout, and your plaster. It also carries a real respiratory hazard for the operator, which is why its use is tightly regulated in most industrial settings. And like glass, it doesn't dissolve, so you're left with sand in the pool. We don't use it, and we'd steer you away from anyone who proposes it for waterline tile.

Is a soft media slower or less effective than something aggressive?

On very heavy calcium silicate, yes — a soft media takes more passes and more material. That's a real trade-off and it's part of why deep deposits carry a surcharge. What you get in return is tile that isn't damaged and a pool with nothing left behind in it. We think that's the right trade every time, because the goal isn't to get the calcium off by any means available; it's to have clean tile that still looks like tile, and that stays easy to clean the next time around.

Walk me through what happens on the day of service.

We arrive, walk the pool with you if you're home, and note anything needing care — loose tile, lights, delicate surfaces. We set up containment and the blasting rig, shut down your pump, and lower the water a few inches below the tile line. Then we work the perimeter section by section, blasting the calcium off and checking results as we go. When the tile is finished we clean up thoroughly: we vacuum the pool to the sewer cleanout, hose and wipe the tile clean, hose down the deck and surrounding areas, and blow clear anything that needs it. Then we apply the complimentary sealant and walk the completed job with you. You refill to your normal waterline, restart your equipment, and you're done.

How long does the job take?

Most residential pools are a single-day job, and many are done in a few hours. Time scales with perimeter and with how thick the calcium is — a 60-foot pool with a light film goes quickly; a 120-foot pool with years of hardened silicate and a raised spa wall takes considerably longer. We'll give you a realistic time window with your quote rather than an optimistic one.

Do I need to be home?

Accepted Answer

No, as long as we have gate access and a working exterior water source and power. Plenty of our customers are at work while we're there. We do like a few minutes with you at the start or the end if you can manage it, because walking the finished tile together is the fastest way to catch anything you'd like addressed while we're still on site.

Question 20

Do you have to drain my pool?

Accepted Answer

No. A standard tile cleaning only needs the water a few inches below the tile line, and your pool stays full. We can lower it ourselves when we arrive, or you can drop it beforehand if you'd prefer. And if you want the pool fully drained — say you're combining this with other work — that's completely fine too. Just tell us when you book so we can plan the day around it.

How much water will I lose, and who refills it?

Very little on a standard job. Dropping a few inches on an average residential pool is a few hundred gallons — noticeable on the meter but not dramatic, and in Phoenix your pool loses that much to evaporation in under a week anyway. You'll top it back up with a hose after we leave, and we'll tell you where to bring it back to. A full drain is a different conversation, and we'll walk you through the water use and timing before you commit to one.

It is loud — a compressor and blaster running is comparable to landscaping or pressure-washing equipment, and it runs for a few hours. We work normal daytime business hours for exactly that reason. There's dust while we work — that's the nature of blasting — but we don't leave it with you. We use containment to limit it during the job, then clean up meticulously afterward: the pool gets vacuumed to the sewer cleanout, the tile is hosed and wiped clean, and the deck and surrounding areas are hosed down and blown clear where needed. Our aim is that the only sign we were there is tile you can see the color of again. We'll ask you to move or cover anything precious near the pool — cushions, an open grill, that sort of thing — and we'll cover what can't be moved. Because kieserite is a soluble mineral rather than a caustic chemical, residue that reaches your plants or lawn is harmless and rinses away.

When can I swim again?

Usually the same day or the next day. Once your water is back to its normal level and the filter has cleared the mineral haze, the pool is yours. There's no waiting period for anything toxic to dissipate, because kieserite isn't toxic. The only reasons to wait are water clarity and your normal chemistry check.

What if some of my tile is cracked, loose, or missing?

We'll spot it on the walk-through and show you before we start. Blasting doesn't create loose tile, but it does find tile that was already failing — a tile held on by nothing but calcium may come off when the calcium does. That's far better discovered now than during a pool party. We handle small repairs and replacements ourselves, often in the same visit, priced separately and clearly so you're never surprised. If it's a larger tile job — a long run of failed tile or a full waterline replacement — we'll refer you to a specialist who does that work all day rather than stretch ourselves into it.

What about the grout between my tiles?

Grout comes out noticeably better. Calcium fills grout lines and blurs them, so once the deposit is gone your tile pattern reads crisp again. If your grout has already failed in spots we'll point it out. Regrouting is a repair rather than a cleaning, and we quote it separately.

Getting it done at the "you can feel it but barely see it" stage is cheaper and gentler than waiting for a visible white band, because thinner deposits mean fewer passes and no depth surcharge.

What we don't do is warranty against future calcium, because no honest company can — re-formation is a function of your water and climate, not our workmanship.

Where your job falls on the ladder depends on the size of the pool, and we'll tell you your exact number up front. Most of our quotes are done without a site visit. We measure your pool's perimeter on Google Earth using your address, then use photos you send us to assess how thick the calcium is and what tile and surfaces we're dealing with. That gets you a real number quickly instead of scheduling an estimator to stand in your backyard for ten minutes. Good photos help a lot: a few wide shots of the whole pool, plus two or three close-ups of the tile right at the waterline.

Yes, and this is another place media choice matters enormously. Pebble surfaces are textured, so a hard media doesn't just abrade the pebbles — it lodges between them, and glass beads packed into a pebble finish are close to impossible to get back out. Kieserite dissolves, so it can't. We remove the calcium scale and the waterline ring from pebble surfaces and bring back the actual stone color, which on an older pool is often several shades different from what the owner expected.

Those are some of the most satisfying jobs we do, and some of the worst calcium in any backyard. Water running constantly over rock in Phoenix produces heavy white scale on the flow path and the spill edge, and it's very visible from the patio. We clean rock waterfalls, spillways, spa spillovers, and decorative features. Because natural rock and flagstone are softer and more variable than tile, a soft media is essential — anything aggressive changes the texture and color of the stone itself.

We can, and we'll be straight with you about when that's the right call. Most pools need the waterline band and nothing else, because that's where evaporation concentrates the minerals. When calcium has spread across steps, benches, a sun shelf, or a tanning ledge — or the whole surface has gone dull and rough — we can address those areas too, priced separately from the linear-foot tile rate. If the interior surface itself is failing rather than just scaled, that's a resurfacing conversation and we'll say so.
