"Hard water" simply means water with a high concentration of dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium. In Arizona, we have some of the hardest water in the nation, and it comes down to geography.
Much of the Valley's water travels through the Central Arizona Project canal from the Colorado River, or comes from the Salt and Verde rivers and local groundwater. Along the way it flows over and through mineral-rich rock, dissolving calcium carbonate the whole trip. By the time it reaches your tap — and your pool — it's carrying 12 to 25+ grains of hardness per gallon.
In a pool, hard water shows up in three places. First, the waterline: a chalky calcium scale that's the most visible and most stubborn. Second, the surfaces below the line — plaster, pebble, and tile can develop a rough, dull film over time. Third, the equipment: heaters, salt cells, and filters all scale up internally, which quietly steals efficiency and shortens their life.
Balancing your water chemistry helps slow scale, but it can't stop it — evaporation always wins in the desert. The realistic strategy is twofold: keep your chemistry balanced to slow buildup, and schedule periodic professional tile cleaning to reset the waterline before scale gets thick and difficult.
