When calcium takes over your waterline, you have three realistic options. Each removes scale differently, and two of them carry real risk to your tile.
Pumice stones are the DIY favorite. They work by grinding — which means they abrade the calcium and your tile at the same time. On ceramic tile you may get away with light use, but on glass, stone, or pebble, pumice leaves fine scratches that dull the surface permanently and actually make future calcium stick faster.
Acid washing (or acid "bead" blasting) uses low pH to dissolve calcium. It can be effective, but acid doesn't discriminate — it attacks grout, can etch natural stone, and dulls the shine on glass tile. Repeated acid treatments weaken grout lines and shorten the life of your finish.
Kieserite media-blasting is the surface-safe choice. Kieserite is a soft mineral media delivered at a controlled low pressure. It fractures and lifts calcium off the tile without grinding or chemically attacking the surface underneath. Glass, ceramic, natural stone, and pebble all come out clean and undamaged — restored to their original look.
